About Aurora

Materials Testing

The Aurora Center for Extreme Weather Materials performs ASTM laboratory and outdoor exposure testing for materials needing to withstand the most severe weather conditions. We ensure that aircraft, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), ground vehicles, vessels, military equipment, and other critical assets remain mission-ready in extremely cold environments by focusing on four essential areas: Performance, Application, Maintenance, and Supporting Readiness.

Aurora is dedicated to bringing together commercial, military, and government partners to address the most pressing challenges in extreme weather conditions, including freezing temperatures, precipitation, and low visibility.

Why North Dakota?

If it works here, it can work anywhere!

Based in Fargo, North Dakota, adjacent to North Dakota State University—home to the oldest and only advanced degree program in corrosion and coatings—Elinor Coatings leverages advanced technology and state-of-the-art equipment to validate groundbreaking research in corrosion and materials science.

In the heart of the Northern Plains, North Dakota offers one of the most extreme winter environments in the continental United States, making it an ideal location for developing and testing materials. Winters in ND frequently see temperatures plunge below -30°F (-34°C) as Arctic air masses descend over the region. These freezing conditions, combined with snow and ice, are combined with summer temperatures that can reach up to 100°F (37°C) and provide a real-life durability testing of materials used in multiple industries.
